How does ON-Q* work?

Opioids: An old way of thinking about pain relief

Traditionally, the way of relieving pain after surgery has been with opioids such as a morphine injection or pain pills. These drugs affect your entire body instead of targeting the actual site of your surgery, and may cause unpleasant side effects. Opioids may actually prevent you from getting back to normal faster.

The brain and entire body are affected

  • Higher risk for intense pain spikes
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Groggy, knocked-out, ‘hangover’ feeling
  • Possible breathing problems
  • Potentially slower recovery
  • Potential for addiction

“The consensus statement of the Society of Pain Management recommends some type of regional block as well as a multimodal medication approach during recovery.”

Don’t be afraid to talk to your physician about using the ON-Q* Pain Relief System, for your pre- and post-surgery questions and your general surgery concerns.

How do you determine how much pain I’ll have after surgery?

Assessment of pain typically occurs before your surgery, and is unique to each person. To make a pain relief plan, your health care provider may talk to you about different pain control methods, such as, ON-Q* Pain Relief System, narcotics or PCA and determine which method will work best for you based on a variety of factors including: your age, weight, gender, pain tolerance, current medications intake and other factors specific to your health.

What are my treatment options for pain?

There are a variety of medications and other treatments used to manage pain. Drugs commonly used to treat post-operative pain are narcotics, NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen and local anesthetics. Unlike local anesthetics, narcotics can have numerous side effects that many feel are negative or uncomfortable. Other methods besides pain medications may also be used for pain relief after surgery. These methods may also be used in combination with pain medications. Examples include cold therapy, massage, nerve stimulation (TENS) and relaxation techniques.

How much will ON-Q* cost me?

You cannot purchase ON-Q* for yourself, it must be obtained by your physician. Insurance coverage will vary by insurance carrier and surgical procedure. Please check with your physician to find out if ON-Q* is covered with your particular surgical procedure.
